An Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) surges skyward from the water’s surface, powerful wings lifting it clear as droplets arc behind, a fish secured in its talons. Moments earlier, the raptor would have hovered high above the water, scanning with razor-sharp vision before folding its wings and plunging feet-first in a dramatic dive. Striking with outstretched talons, it can briefly submerge completely before beating its wings to rise again, as seen here.. Equipped with reversible outer toes and spiny foot pads for gripping slippery prey, the Osprey is uniquely specialized for a life of fishing—this image capturing the precision, strength, and spectacle of its remarkable hunting technique.
