A Red-spectacled Parrot perches gracefully among the lush green branches of an araucaria tree. The bright red circles around the birds eyes give it its name. After their breeding season in the northern, temperate rainforest of Brazil, these parrots migrate south to where, in times past, the would find forests of araucaria trees. Today, the araucarias are found in small, scattered pockets. Nonetheless, the parrots seek them out and eat the seeds of the cones. The araucaria tree itself is a cCritically Endangered species due to clearing of forests for wood and farmland. The Red-spectacled Parrot is so dependent on the seeds of these trees that the species' population is falling, and these parrots are listed as Vulnerable. Observing such wildlife in their natural habitat highlights the importance of preserving these species and their environments.
