This stunning photograph captures the powerful stride of an African lion as it walks along a river bank at sunset. Motion shots like this are called "panning shots" as the photographer follows the animal (pans) with a slow shutter speed. Hopefully the animal does not move its head much as it moves along, but the movement of the legs are blurred, as is the background. Overall, one gets the impression by the blur, but the animal is clearly identified by the sharp focus on the head. The chances of getting a useful image is quite low, but good images are quite different and quite interesting. This image was taken from a boat in the river as the lion walked on the bank. The sun had already set, so there was not enough light to get a good image. However, a panning shot uses a slow shutter speed, so light was not an issue with this shot. We simply floated along at the same speed as the lion walked, allowing me to follow the lion with the camera without to much difficulty.
